High Demand for BREEAM Assessors in Birmingham
Birmingham has undergone a transformation over the past twenty years with an extraordinary city-centre transformation culminating recently in the unveiling of New Street Station re-imagined for the 21st century. The cost of constructing and operating major projects such as these is now measured not only in labour, bricks and mortar, but also in environmental and energy costs incurred along the way. A BREEAM assessment helps developers to plan for a sustainable built environment by designing for energy conservation and low carbon emissions.
What is BREEAM?
The Building Research Establishment Environment Assessment Method may be a bit of a mouthful but it’s a government initiative we can be truly proud of. It was set up in the early 1990s as a method of assessing, rating and certifying the energy usage of new builds in the UK. BREEAM arrives at its sustainability rating by measuring a range of categories: energy, materials, transport, health and well-being, waste, pollution, management, water and ecology. Buildings undergoing the BREEAM assessment are rated as: Pass, Good, Very Good, Excellent and Outstanding. The highest rating will be awarded to a building which demonstrates an understanding of its impact upon the environment and mitigates that impact through innovative and responsible design.
BREEAM Assessors Add Value to New Builds
BREEAM guidance for developers and planners recommends that an experienced BREEAM assessor be engaged to advise on sustainable design at the earliest stages of planning. At Hilsdon Holmes we recognise that this can be seen as extra cost on a build project, but the return on investment is excellent. If you are a client in retail, public sectors, residential or a heritage site across the West Midlands region our Birmingham team of consultants can help with your BREEAM assessment, the benefits of doing so will far outweigh the costs involved.
A BREEAM assessor will work with the design team at the design stage to determine the potential BREEAM rating of the build, and to provide advice on ways to maximise the possibility of meeting that potential. A design stage report is submitted after this initial consultation and the recommended sustainability measures are integrated into the building process. The post-construction assessment tests the success of the process and a BREEAM report details the steps that have been taken to ensure the long-term sustainability of energy usage, low carbon emissions and environmental impact.
